Bosch, a German multinational automotive engineering and technology company, chose India to establish its largest technology center outside Germany a quarter of a century ago. Since then, India has brought growth in multiple dimensions and is now poised to continue spearheading Bosch’s digitalization and innovation activities globally, said Dattatri Salagame, CEO, President and Managing Director, Bosch Global Software Technologies Pvt. ltd. (BGSW) in exclusive interaction with The Hindu. Edited excerpts:

What is the rationale for Bosch’s recent global name change (RBEI)?

We recently changed our name globally from Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions (RBEI) to Bosch Global Software Technologies (BGSW). The new name reflects our technological and business advancements and illustrates our ability to create “Fit for Future” technology products and services. As a software company, we apply cutting-edge techniques to solve some of the toughest problems in areas such as mobility, manufacturing, sustainability and consumer goods. We want to communicate and invite bright talent ecosystems and innovation hubs to join us. This name change represents the company’s identity, capabilities, competencies, global scale and the central role it plays in product engineering at Bosch.

Will this new branding reinforce Bosch’s focus on digital technology and innovation?

Bosch is constantly striving to bring the best in technological innovation to businesses. The increased maturity and adoption of data-driven, distributed computing, cloud and edge computing technologies provide opportunities for further innovation. Last year, we created an exclusive unit, Software & Digital Solutions, to focus on a portfolio of connected businesses and connected products. We believe the future of mobility will be software-defined. Additionally, we are also looking to strengthen our focus on innovation at BGSW with targeted investments. We recently launched Hacker’s Garage, also an innovation fund to foster an environment where promising ideas can be nurtured, incubated and scaled.

How will AIShield provide additional security coverage in a highly cyber-threatened environment?

It’s an industry-first, patented AI security SaaS offering that brings hacker-level vulnerability assessment and security hardening through custom defenses from endpoints to enterprise devices and cloud solutions. ‘organization. We realized the need to create a final layer of defense for AI models to plug in new attack surfaces and security threats. The idea for Bosch AIShield was born in 2020 and the solution was unveiled at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2022 in Las Vegas. We all know that organizations strive to protect their valuable digital assets such as data and information. Exploiting AI can also lead to financial loss, reputational damage, loss of competitive advantage, and loss of intellectual property for businesses. With AIShield’s end-to-end security offering, even small security teams and AI/ML developers can ensure that AI systems are monitored and protected.

How important is India to Bosch in the world in terms of software/product development and R&D?

India is Bosch’s largest software and technology center outside of Germany. Although BGSW is headquartered in Bengaluru, it caters to customers and partners from all geographies and industries on their digitalization journey. Targeted investments are reflected in the ramping up of our infrastructure, our innovation labs, our national expansion plans and also in the development of talent. Our start-up incubation program – DNA (Discover, Nurture, Align) – and innovation labs such as Hacker’s Garage, IoT Garage, etc. further stimulate innovation. Our work involves the application of electronics and computation to solve domain problems. For example, in the field of mobility – autonomous driving, automotive computing, gateways, V2X (vehicle-to-anything) – connectivity, electrification and security are among the most difficult problems that our engineers work on. In healthcare, BGSW focuses on products, solutions to detect abnormalities in blood anatomy, hemoglobin-based detection in a non-invasive digital way using computer vision and imaging technologies. related data. What about your hiring plans?

We will hire approximately 5,500 professionals in 2022, to complement our existing employee base of 25,000. We are looking for talent who has a deep understanding of technology and an ability to solve real-time problems. Therefore, we look at capabilities in data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, mechatronics, robotics, edge computing, hyperscale cloud development/deployment, and full IoT to name a few. . We would also hire experts with deep domain and systems knowledge, especially in the area of ​​mobility. BGSW would play a major role in Bosch’s digital transformation globally and as a result, we would be keen to hire talent with proven business digital transformation skills.

When should your centers in Hyderabad and Pune be operational?

In India, we are expanding beyond Coimbatore and Bengaluru to include Hyderabad and Pune which will be operational by mid-2022. To begin with, we will be hiring approximately 1,000 professionals this year for these two new centers and increasing this to 5,000 professionals by 2025. We also plan to expand our footprint to North and East India. In addition, we are opening a new center in North Vietnam in Hanoi and plan to hire 400 people this year. We are incubating a center in Poland. We will also continue to expand customer-facing roles in the United States and Japan.
